STUDENT DISTINCTIONS

som

Congratulations to Bret Harte Students of the Month for January, Aurora Lewis and Sophie Bouma, who were honored at the Angels-Murphys Rotary Luncheon on Thursday, January 18. The following information was shared about Aurora and Sophie.

“This month we have two students with which you would likely choose to go to battle with. They are both on the quiet side but will speak up as needed. They are both team players who are positive to both teammates and competitors. They set high standards for themselves and on rare occasions they fall short, will make no excuses, and will double down their efforts. To class and in sports, they bring focus and integrity, and are well-respected by the staff school.”

Sophie Bouma: “While typically quiet in class, we can count on Sophie to always pay attention to all details, which explains for her stellar GPA. Sophie is an active member of California Scholarship Federation and Future Farmers of America. Part of her community service includes a December toy drive, a November food drive, flower planting in the spring, writing letters to first responders, and making floral designs for the elderly. Sophie is a great team player in volleyball, basketball, and track. She has slowed with a recent knee injury but has been still cheering on her teammates during games from the bench. Sophie will be attending Duke University where she plans to major in bio-chemistry. Her current post-college target is to specialize as a nutritionist and dietitian. Sophie spends some of her free time baking Christmas cookies with her grandparents utilizing recipes connected to her Swiss heritage.”

Aurora Lewis: “Like Sophie, Aurora’s schedule is a full plate. She is member of Academic Decathlon, Spanish Honors Society, Future Farmers Association, California Scholarship Federation, and Interact. She is also very involved in the county’s Juvenile Justice System and the Mock SCOTUS as well as the BOAC program in FFA. Aurora has been accepted to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts where she will further her competition in Track & Field. Aurora will double major in Political Science and Mathematics with the long-term goal to become a lawyer followed by becoming a judge. Aurora is used to setting high standards for herself, as she has danced for 14 years including 11 years at point.  We can bet she will utilize her analytical skills and sense of fairness to make just decisions on the bench.” | Photo courtesy of Mr. Nanik.

Congratulations to the Bret Harte Independent Study Program's Student of the Semester, Silas Langdon, who were honored at the Angels-Murphys Rotary Luncheon on Thursday, January 18. The following information was shared about Silas.

"I am proud to introduce Mr. Silas Langdon as our BHISP student of the semester. Silas is a wonderful young man with impeccable character and values. He is goal driven and consistently evaluates all decisions on how they will help him achieve his dream of becoming a Navy Seal. Silas was a member of the Varsity Water Polo team last fall and will be competing with our swim team this spring. Being successful working through Independent Study is a challenge that most freshman struggle with as it takes a great deal of self-discipline and internal motivation, Silas has conquered these challenges and is thriving in our program. Congrats to Silas and his parents." - Mr. Lane, Instructor and BHISP Coordinator | Photo courtesy of Mr. Nanik

Congratulations to the Vallecito Student of the Semester, Mariah Sanchez, who was honored at the Angels-Rotary Luncheon on Thursday, January 18 at the Murphys Hotel. The following information was shared about Mariah.

“Mariah came to VHS as a sophomore and adapted well to the individualized education system and will likely graduate before the end of her senior year. [She] is the top of this current VHS class in terms of success with the material, forward progress, and GPA. Mariah is a quiet young woman who works diligently, but when she does decide to jump into an academic conversation in class, her ideas are always well-considered, clear, and unique. She is a pleasure to have in class and will make significant contributions to society as an adult!” – Mr. Reese, Alternative Ed. Teacher | Photo courtesy of Mr. Nanik
